l have a jeep cherokee 2004 2.5 sport petrol are they a good off-roader and why also are they any good at towing

Yeah Its good very good for mountains

The 2004 Cherokee was available as a 2.4 petrol or 2.5 diesel;
They're OK off road, but l would not use a petrol for any serious off roading or towing - diesel engines are far better suited for both of these tasks.
As far as off road ability goes, the Jeep has low range gears & a centre diff lock, meaning that apart from a bit of a lack of axle articulation, it is as good as a Discovery off road.

Yes they are good, not as good as say a Wrangler but with a little bigger tire and maybe a lift their great.

offroad with it stock it will do ok u can really add bigger tires & a lift. if u had the 4.0 then it would be way better a couple of my friends had cherokees & they do very well in mud & other stuff

l have an 88 cherokee and l have a 4.5 lift and 31 super sumpers and its great

First of all.You don`t have a Cherokee, u have a Liberty !
All Jeeps r very capable off road, some r just better than others. All r tested on a trail called The Rubicon, which is much tougher than most of the legal trails u can use in UK.
The 2.5 petrol is a bit weak-kneed for towing, the diesel is better. It`s not the size of the engine that is important for towing, it`s the kerb-weight, & the Liberty is not as heavy as u might think. Take it to a weighbridge. l took my `95 Cherokee 4.0ltd & was surprised to find it ''only'' weighs 1640Kg,!
